You Should Be Listening To: Sean-Touré Thames

Sean-Touré is one of those cool artists who I came to the realization I was a fan before I even knew who they were. He’s one of those cats who put out tracks and remixes and you end up hearing in passing and thinking ‘that’s hot’, but never finding out who produced them. That’s been my experience with Mr. Thames. That came to an end when I started choppin’ it up with him on facebook.

In 2007, one of my favorite albums of the year came from an indie artist named J Soul. There was a cut I fell in love with called “Control”. This slow tempo, melodic cut was reminiscent of the downtempo electronic cuts that was on my mp3 player 24/7. I played it so much that I forgot what the rest of the album sounded like.

Fast forward a couple years and I’m choppin’ it up with my man Sean-Touré and just happened to ask him about his discography. Somehow he dropped the knowledge that he produced “Control” on Jsoul’s album. I immediately started doing some digging and found his production stamp on more than a few cuts I loved, including a remix is Kev Brown’s  ”Life’s A Gamble” and Petey & C.L’s “It’s A Love Thing”.

For those who don’t know, Sean-Touré Thames is the real deal. I’m expecting him to make an impact in 2010, start with the release of “The Sean-Touré Remix Project”(scheduled for release early next year).

Sean-Touré Thames – My Time

Autobiography

Since his days freestyling and breakdancing for money on the streets of Baltimore, Sean-Toure’ Thames has taken his music career to the next level. Taking advantage of his growing up during the Golden era of Hip-Hop, Sean has incorporated the classic boom bap sounds of Rap music into his creative and diverse sound.

Sean has quickly developed a reputation as one of Baltimore’s best performers/producer/emcees. Sean has gained much respect from producing music for some of Baltimore’s best recording artist, his success as a test bin Winner on the Morgan St. Strictly Hip-Hop Radio Show, and his energetic live performances. Sean was blessed with artistic talent from both sides of his family.

He attributes his diverse sound from being influenced by the painting/visual artist, photographers, and musicians on his maternal side, the down home southern blues minded family members on his paternal side, and his older brother Imam Michael-Nasir Mikail Thames who introduced Rock & Roll, Jazz, and Funk to him. I love Sean Toure! I’ve been watching him do his thing at shows for years in Baltimore. He’s produced so many songs for other artist, I’m just glad to see him finally come out with his own project. He’s as great an emcee as he is a producer. I can’t wait to hear both projects.

  2. Sammy says:

Sean is a great artist. I saw him open a show last Summer. His set was so strong it made me forget about the headliner…lol! He’s one of the next best things in Hip Hop for sure. Dude is really raising the bar.

I’ve been telling people about Sean Toure for years. I think Sean is one of the illest emcee/producers I’ve heard since Oddisee, Kev Brown, or Diamond D. His musical range reminds me of a J Dilla, Pete Rock, or 9th Wonder. I’m very excited to hear this CD.

Way 2 go Sean! Baltimore Hip Hop represent!

  6. Tray says:

Sean-Toure is a very capable emcee, worthy of blessing the phenomenal soundscapes of his beats. Sounding like he learned the ropes from Pete Rock and Jay Dee. Sean will quickly establish himself as one of hip-hop’s best producers with this album. The remix project and CD will be on my list of things to cop in 2010.
